About Me

Hello!! Welcome to my page! My name is Ashley and I am the face behind Spedtacular Days. I am a middle school self-contained teacher in Northern Virginia. I teach all subjects including a functional skills class. It is my job to create and adapt curriculum for a variety of needs in my classroom. Differentiating is one of my favorite parts of my job. Seeing one topic come to life in a multiple ways makes my heart so happy. Thanks for joining me on my teaching journey. Looking forward to some laughs and great memories ahead!!

When I am not teaching I am a wife to my amazing husband, Greg, a mom to 2.5 year old boy and 4 month old boy/girl twins. Life with 3 under 3 has become quite an adventure...stay tuned to see what life brings us next!!

Menu Math

Life skills + Money Skills = ONE GREAT THING! Menu math is one of my favorite activities to use in the classroom. I started creating menu math worksheets because money skills are a large focus in middle school and many students have money IEP goals. I figured out a way I could use the same menu, but personalize the worksheets to meet all my student's needs. Menu math is SO easy to differentiate! How you ask?! Check out below how I used it in my classroom, created IEP goals for this, and made it engaging and fun my students asked me to make more! Differentiating Examples: Student A - identifying the foods on the menu and numbers in prices using words or AAC device. Student could also count the items on the worksheets. I also would just use the 1st number in the price (dollars only) and use manipulatives to have the student count and identify the number on AAC device. Student would also use cut out numbers and paste the prices under each picture instead of writing. ...

Sensory Boxes

Sensory Boxes!! Who loves them?! ME….and my students!! Sensory boxes are one of the most sought after items in my classroom! What better way to start this teaching blog than with something I love to create and use myself. One of the many reasons I love sensory bins is because you can customize them to any child. They can include items that are of that child's interest.  Sensory boxes are a great way to entertain a wide age range of students. They are not just for a special needs classroom. They can be used in all classroom settings and at home too. My toddler l-o-v-e-s using them as well! How I use sensory boxes in my classroom: Small Breaks Rewards Sensory time Prior to electives After lunch  Each time they are used the class or child is given a timer to use.
